I have a masters degree in classical percussion and I also played the drumset when I was young. I play music less often now, but rhythm is still very present in my life and it's always an aspect of music that grabs my attention. One of my first experiments in painting was to try to represent some kind of rhythmic pulse visually. I tried different methods: creating simple shapes (mostly squares) which are set up using a given pattern (ex. Rhythmic shimmering space); suggesting rhythm using color (ex. Visual hypnosis); making vertical lines that represent a basic pulse, with visual elements on top representing different rhythms (ex. Peaceful rhythm). This last technique was inspired by the composer Edgard Varèse and his ideas of pulse and rhythm.
Although I like many of these paintings, I was never quite satisfied with the results concerning the idea of expressing rhythm visually. I never felt I could sense rhythm in any way when looking at one of these works. That is why I have, for the time being, put aside my work on rhythm, but with the intention of continuing in the future. I have a new idea I'm working on now, but since its development will require financing, I can't tell when I will be able to bring this idea to life.
